The City In Spires – A Tour of Wren’s Churches
The City skyline is famous for it’s delightful church spires. Many of them came from the design office of one man, Sir Christopher Wren. After the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the City, there was a great need to rebuild. Wren famously built his masterpiece, the new St Paul’s Cathedral. He was also responsible for the fifty one churches to be built by Act of Parliament.
Wren gave the City some wonderful churches, many of which survive today. Each one is different, and on this walk we’ll look at some of the developments in design. As we look at some of them we can see Wren trying out new features which he would then use somewhere else.
To see the inside of these churches is not always possible, though the walk can take you around to look at the outsides any day. In general mid-week is best, as most of the churches are closed on Saturdays and some on Mondays or Fridays.
